Description The Coroner’s officers work for the Coroner and report to the D/Insp at Salisbury.
The Coroner’s Officers are responsible for ensuring the Coroner has sufficient information to decide on deceased people’s manner of death. They are required to work with doctors, the hospitals, police, undertakers and other agencies to ensure that sufficient information is gathered and properly presented.
They are responsible for arranging Inquests and keeping the next of kin of deceased people informed about the progress of an inquiry. Other responsibilities include gathering evidence of identification and ensuring that the Human Tissue Act is complied with.
A major part of the role includes dealing with bereaved people, arranging post-mortem examinations and dealing with bodies that arrive in the county from abroad. The work is rewarding and demanding, but can be very stressful and upsetting. The Coroner’s Officers have to deal with death on a daily basis and remain tactful and diplomatic when dealing with bereaved people at their lowest ebb.
The right person for the job will have excellent interpersonal skills, work well in a small team – but also be able to work alone.
A high level of organisational skill is required to manage the inquests and investigations. A high level of resilience is required to deal with the subject matter.
The ideal candidate will have an investigative background with some knowledge of medical conditions.
The successful candidate will be based at Salisbury; driving to various locations may be necessary.
